Meet the Owner - Coup de Foudre Lingerieposted Tuesday, August 02 by Andrew Moreno
Meet the owner of Coup de Foudre Lingerie, a high-end European lingerie store located in Downtown, DC (Corner of 11th & E Street NW).
Name: Coup de Foudre Lingerie
Owner: Valerie Lucas
How long have you been in business?
Coup de Foudre Lingerie has been in business since 2004. During the last seven years, we have become a trusted European bra-fitting store in Washington, DC.
How did you get into this business?
I grew up in Paris, France, where lingerie is an essential component of a French woman’s wardrobe, as well as a key instrument in the seduction tool kit. Thus, French women wear, and have access to, high-quality, stylish lingerie that is not only beautiful, but also comfortable and fits properly. I thought- well why not share and bring my experience to American customers. At the time, there was nothing like it in Washington, DC: a store where you help women select the best undergarments for their body type and outfit and teach them how the right fit combined with the right styles can improve the way they look.
What did you do in a previous life? What was your first job ever?
My very first job was working as a marketing intern at a tableware/kitchenware company in France. There, I learned how to design brochures and create price lists on a Mac. More recently, I worked in the software industry, developing customer relationship management solutions for the retail industry. This experience, together with a Masters degree in International Management, helped me launch and grow a successful business!
Is this your first entrepreneurial experience?
Yes. But it may not be the last!
Did you always want to be your own boss?
Not necessarily. While the idea of becoming your own boss is attractive and tempting, it has a lot of ups and downs. It can be exhilarating and exciting (your sales are way up! Yippee!) but also anxiety producing (my expenses are 20% up) and sometimes downright scary. I like that I can immediately implement a marketing strategy or business idea, without having to wait for management’s approval.
Why should customers choose you? What makes your business different from your competition?
At Coup de Foudre Lingerie, we will fit you in European bras that support and lift your assets so that you look and feel your best. We also simplify the bra-buying process by narrowing down bra size and best fit based on each customer’s body shape, concerns (saggy breast- anyone?) and style. We mainly carry European lingerie brands and specialize in bra sizes that might be difficult to find (32A-40G). Without our expert input, this can be a time-consuming, frustrating shopping process. For additional reasons why you should choose Coup de Foudre and schedule a bra fitting appointment, check out our customer reviews on Yelp.com.
The best part of doing business in DC is…
We have access to a well-educated local and international client base – the type of customers who are interested in high-quality European lingerie!
What are your upcoming events?
Every October, during the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we raise money for the Susan G Kommen for the Cure: We donate $5 for every bra fitting appointment scheduled online with the purchase of 1 bra during the month of October, up to $1,000.
